A Cat Tree You Can Sit On: The Shared-Seat Idea for Small Apartments

on

A cat in a studio apartment has the same needs as a cat in a house: a perch near you, something to scratch, something to hunt. The difference is that you do not have a spare corner for a five-foot tower. A chair-style cat tree takes a different approach: make the cat furniture a piece of furniture you use too, at the size of a stool.

Here is why the shared-seat idea works with cat instincts, what a good chair cat tree includes, and how to set one up so the cat claims it on day one.

Why cats steal your seat

Cats want to be near their people, at the same height, on a surface that smells like you. That is why the chair you just left is more attractive than the bed you bought them. A chair cat tree works with that instinct: a round seat a person can sit on, topped with a removable plush pad for the cat. You sit; the cat hops up beside you and leans into the arch. You stand; the cat spreads out on the pad like it was the plan all along.

Because the pad lifts off, it goes in the wash and can be swapped seasonally.

Four textures, because cats are picky

Not every cat likes sisal. Some rake hard on rope, some drag sideways on felt, some rub their cheeks and flanks along something soft and brushy. Most scratchers offer one surface, and if your cat does not like it, the ottoman pays. A well-designed chair cat tree spreads its posts across textures: a curved plush arch, sisal rope, felt and soft brush. You find out which one your cat prefers, and the furniture stops being the target.

  • Sisal rope for the hard, vertical rake.
  • Felt for a lateral drag with the claws out.
  • Soft brush for a grooming-style rub along cheek and flank.
  • A plush arch overhead to lean into and cheek-mark from the perch.

Scratching at floor level, with movement

Not every cat scratches standing up. Plenty prefer to lie on their side and rake, or scratch in circles on a rug. Stacked sisal balls at the base that rotate freely through 360 degrees give those cats a surface that moves under the paw and stays interesting, and they replace the flattened cardboard scratcher most small apartments cycle through.

Play without a human

A rattle ball hanging inside the arch at perch height is a small detail with a big payoff. A cat sitting on the pad jabs it, it swings and jingles, and the cat jabs again. Sound plus movement is what keeps a cat in a play session, and here it is built in.

Size, stability and the design point

A chair cat tree in the 33-to-34-inch range on a square footprint of about 17.7 inches is stool-sized: it goes beside the sofa, by the desk or in the entry rather than in a closet. Look for a plywood frame, around 10 lb assembled, and a pet weight rating of 50 lb or so, which covers even the largest house cats. Place it on a flat floor and re-tighten the posts after a couple of weeks of use.

Color matters more than it sounds. Bold, postmodern-inspired color blocking in blue, pink, yellow and orange reads as a design object first and cat furniture second, which is exactly why it ends up next to the sofa, where the cat will actually use it.

Getting the cat to claim it

Put it where you sit most; shared furniture only works if it is near you. Let the cat watch you sit on it first, which is the fastest endorsement there is. Spin the base sisal balls by hand once to show the movement, and most cats take over from there.

FAQ

Can a person really sit on a chair cat tree?

Yes, when it is built as a seat: a round stool-height top on a plywood frame with four posts to the base. Sit normally and let the cat share the perch; check the product page for any stated human load limit.

Is a 33.8-inch chair cat tree tall enough?

For a perch, yes. That is roughly chair-seat height, which is where cats already want to be when they sit with you. Cats who need several levels to leap between will want a taller tree.

What scratching surfaces should a chair cat tree have?

Ideally more than one. A mix of sisal rope, felt, soft brush and a plush arch covers the main scratching preferences, and rotating sisal balls at the base add a horizontal option for cats who scratch lying down.

Is the seat pad washable?

On a well-designed model the short-pile plush pad lifts off the seat for washing and can be swapped for a cooler cover in summer.

Our Pick: The ZEZE Chair Cat Tree

ZEZE 33.8-in Bobo Ball Memphis-Inspired Chair Cat Tree is a 33.8-inch perch you can actually sit on. The round seat carries a removable plush pad for the cat, a curved plush arch rises over it with a sisal ball on top and a rattle ball hanging inside, and three more posts in sisal, felt and soft brush give four scratching textures in one piece. Three stacked sisal balls at the base spin freely through 360 degrees for the cat who scratches sideways.

It measures 17.7 by 17.7 by 33.8 inches, weighs 10 lb assembled on a plywood frame with a polyester cover, and is recommended for cats up to 50 lb. Assembly is required and the tools are included. ZEZE dressed it in Memphis-inspired color blocking, blue, pink, yellow, orange and brown, so it belongs in the room rather than the corner. It suits studios and small apartments, cats who always want your chair, cats who prefer felt or soft textures over sisal, and decor that leans bold and playful.
